Kāwili Lā‘au was the bi-annual magazine published by the Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo. It served as a donor-facing piece and showcased student and faculty achievements and happenings. After several years of publication, the magazine was in need of a new visual identity that represented the culture and place-based focus of the college, its curriculum and its community.
The Hawaiian imagery and motifs used in the mural located in the college’s main building served as the primary inspiration for the re-brand, including the masthead's line element -- inspired by the slopes of the surrounding geographic features. New elements included a brighter, more diverse color palette, more modern and approachable typography and masthead, and flexible page layouts with distinct section styles for regular features.
